Comet McNaught C/2006 P1 at dusk

(Graz, Jan 10-12, 2007)

C/2006 P1, also known as Comet McNaught, is a non-periodic comet that was discovered on August 7, 2006 in Australia by Robert H. McNaught.
Comet McNaught first became visible to the naked eye in early January, 2007. It was viewable as a magnitude -3 comet in the northern hemisphere near Venus, until January 13, 2007.

Due to its proximity to the sun it had a short window for viewing, and could only be spotted during twilight.
The comet passed SOHO LASCO C3's field of view from January 12 - 15, and quickly became brighter than any other comet since 40 years.

All images are done from a hill on the east side of Graz.
Equipment: Canon 10D on tripod, 50 mm resp. 200 mm EF lens.

After Jan 15 the comet will move south quickly and be observable from southern latitudes only.
